A bet builder lets you combine several markets from a single match into one bet — the All Blacks to win, over 45.5 points, and your pick as first try scorer, all rolled into one boosted price. Also called a same-game multi (SGM), it’s one of the fastest-growing ways Kiwis bet, and we ranked the books with the deepest, best-priced builders below.
Below we explain what a bet builder and same-game multi actually are, how combining markets changes your odds, what correlated legs mean (and why legs grey out), the most popular combos for NZ sport, and the cash-out rules that catch punters out. This is a feature offshore books lead on — the same-game options at TAB NZ and Betcha exist but are more limited.
A traditional multi (accumulator) combines picks from different matches. A bet builder, or same-game multi (SGM), combines picks from the same match into one wager. Instead of just backing the Warriors to beat the Storm, you might combine: Warriors to win, over 38.5 total points, and a named player to score a try. All legs must land for the bet to win, but the combined odds are far bigger than any single market — and books let you build it in a few taps on mobile.
The names differ by market: “same-game multi (SGM)” is the Australasian term you’ll see at TAB NZ and Betcha, “bet builder” is the British term used by many offshore books, and “same-game parlay” is the American version. The mechanics are identical.
When you add legs, the individual odds multiply into one larger price. Three legs at 1.80, 1.90 and 2.10 combine to roughly 7.18, so a NZ$10 stake returns about NZ$71.80. That’s the appeal — a modest stake can return a big payout — but every extra leg lowers the chance that all of them land. The maths rewards you with a bigger price precisely because you’re asking for more things to happen at once.
| Legs | Example odds | Combined price | NZ$10 returns | Strike rate |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2 | 1.80 × 1.90 | 3.42 | NZ$34.20 | Higher |
| 3 | 1.80 × 1.90 × 2.10 | 7.18 | NZ$71.80 | Moderate |
| 4 | 1.80 × 1.90 × 2.10 × 2.00 | 14.36 | NZ$143.60 | Lower |
| 5 | add another 2.00 leg | 28.72 | NZ$287.20 | Low |
How adding legs multiplies the price — and lowers the odds of every leg landing.
The catch with bet builders is correlated legs — outcomes that are statistically linked. If you back the All Blacks to win and a specific first-five to score 15+ points, those are correlated: one makes the other more likely. Bookmakers either block obviously correlated combinations or reprice the builder to strip out the edge, which is why some legs grey out the moment you add a related one. It’s not a bug — the book is protecting its margin.
The best builders allow a wide range of combinations while pricing correlation fairly, rather than blocking anything interesting. When a leg greys out, it simply means the book has flagged it as too closely tied to something already on your slip.
A bet builder needs at least two selections from the same match, and most books let you stack up to around a dozen. Building one is quick once you know where to look — the process is the same across most apps.
Kiwi punters gravitate to a handful of reliable same-game combinations. These are the builders we see most often across NZ sport — a useful starting point, not a tip sheet.
| Sport | Popular same-game multi combo |
|---|---|
| Rugby union (All Blacks / Super Rugby) | Match result + total points + first or anytime try scorer |
| Rugby league (Warriors / NRL) | Try scorer + winning margin + total points |
| Football (EPL / World Cup) | Match result + both teams to score + a named goalscorer |
| Cricket (Black Caps) | Match winner + top batter + team total runs |
| Tennis | Match winner + total games + set betting |
Common combinations Kiwis build — always bet to your own read, not a template.
Two rules trip punters up. First, cash out: some offshore books let you cash out a bet builder if most legs have already landed, but many don’t — and TAB NZ does not offer cash out on same-game multis at all. Never build an SGM assuming you can bail out early unless you’ve confirmed the book allows it.
Second, voids: if one leg is voided (for example a named player is a late scratching), most books void that leg and recalculate the builder on the remaining legs — but some void the entire bet and refund your stake. The rules differ by operator, so it pays to read the same-game-multi terms before a big match.
Two features extend the basic builder. Many books now allow in-play bet building, so you can combine live markets from the same match — next try scorer plus race-to-points during a Super Rugby second half, for instance. And SGM+ (called Bet Builder+ at some books) lets you combine several same-game multis, or an SGM with legs from other matches, into one larger accumulator for an even bigger price and an even lower strike rate.
Both are powerful and both amplify variance. They’re best used with small stakes and a clear head, not as a way to turn a modest bankroll into a jackpot.
Not every book that offers a builder does it well. We rank each on the range of markets you can actually combine per match, how fairly correlation is priced, whether the mobile builder is quick and clear, and how transparent the cash-out and void rules are. Books that boost popular builders and allow in-play building score higher, while those that grey out anything interesting or hide their void terms score lower.
Gambling should be entertainment, not a way to make money. Only bet what you can afford to lose, set deposit and time limits, and never chase losses. In New Zealand, gambling winnings are tax-free and offshore play is not an offence for individuals — but the risk is real.
